Choose: A quick death…Or slow poison…
About to be executed for murder, Yelena is offered an extraordinary reprieve. She’ll eat the best meals, have rooms in the palace—and risk assassination by anyone trying to kill the Commander of Ixia. And so Yelena chooses to become a food taster. But the chief of security, leaving nothing to chance, deliberately feeds her Butterfly’s Dust—and only by appearing for her daily antidote will she delay an agonizing death from the poison. As Yelena tries to escape her new dilemma, disasters keep mounting. Rebels plot to seize Ixia and Yelena develops magical powers she can’t control. Her life is threatened again and choices must be made. But this time the outcomes aren’t so clear…

I stumbled upon this book while reading The Broke and Bookish past blog about their top ten heroines. This was her number one heroine and she sounded like a great story to read so that is what I did. I picked up the book from Amazon because it was cheaper than at Barnes and Noble..again I purchased it as an eBook (sorry but I just can’t get myself to buy a $12 hardcover book when I could get the eBook for $4!). And OMG!! I couldn’t put the book down! I just had to finish it and that’s what I did for the rest of the day. Only took me about 5 hours…it is a pretty long book which I was super excited about. I like longer books sometimes because you are not limited in space and as long as the story flows really well you can add so much more. That is exactly what Synder did. She added so much to the characters and to the backstory that I felt transported to Ixia. Not once did I ever feel like it was too long or when will this book ever end that is something magical!

The story follows Yelena who has been rotting in the dungeons for about a year now. The day has finally come where she is to be executed for killing her foster brother. Then she meets Valek the Commander’s assassin and asks her if she wants to become the food taster for the Commander (who took over Ixia a while back and killed all the royal family and major influential people) instead of dying. She agrees and her journey begins! She learns all about poisons while also trying to stay alive for her foster brothers father is out to finish her! Not only that but there is a plot underfoot in the castle. The Commander is acting weird and there is a magician out to kill her (magicians are not welcomed in Ixia). As her story moves along, you learn more about her past and why she killed her foster brother and its a DARK story! Yelena grows from a cowered girl who didn’t understand anything to a confident woman who rushed into bad situations but always made the best of it. I think that is her greatest strong-point is that she cares for everyone else and will rush into dangerous situations to save that one person. She is witty and sarcastic which I also love and there is a little romance but doesn’t take away from the story/plot. It enhances it for sure!

I have finished reading the second in the series, Magic Study and have moved on to Fire Study. The Magic Study review will be up shortly. So you can obviously tell that I am in LOVE with the series. I have also started on Synders other series, Touch of Power which the review will be up shortly also and I have started on the second book of that series, Scent of Magic.

P.S. There are multiple covers out there but I felt like this one was the best. It didn’t show a face which I like just because I want to picture what she looks like in my head rather than have something else imprint that on to me. The red robe(dress) plays a part in the story and I feel like all the other covers didn’t portray as much as this one did.

QUESTION FOR MY READERS!: Do you have a book that has multiple covers and have a favorite one that really speaks to you or somehow portrays the story/plot better than the others?
